I'd like to run Ubuntu in the same way I used to use knoppix ... essentially I created a liveCD with all my defaults, then put the iso on my hard drive and booted from it in a way that the liveCD ran 100% in memory. It took a while to boot, but it was fast and the most robust system in the world because I never touched the original OS other than to pull it out an into memory. I also kept my content on another partition of the drive... it was writable. The ISO partition was not writable. It was great as an unattended kiosk ... ultra-reliable... never bogged down (everythin (Hardware)

I have a 320gb USB hard drive, one partition for my files, one for playing Wii games, and one which I would like to use for an Ubuntu instillation.

To do this, I partitioned my disk accordingly using Windows, then booted from the Ubuntu CD to install the OS to my external hard drive partition.

So, it's been a few weeks that I have been looking all over, read tons of forum post from either Linux websites, Ubuntu, or here (BT) community. I also spoke to 2 of my professors in IT.

How can I use a USB flash drive to boot Linux from a partition on (another) hard drive?

I'm trying to install Linux on an encrypted partition on the hard drive (using LVM on LUKS).

Since /boot must be on a separate, unencrypted partition, I would like to store it on a USB flash drive.

My plan was to install GRUB (2) to the flash drive (/dev/sdb) and boot Linux from it's MBR, or if the drive was

Hello, I recently downloaded a liveCD of fedora, and it looks similar to the linux's my school uses, even though it says Gentoo, I got the gentoo and it looks nothing like the school one, but this one does.

I am planning to build my own computer and don't want to buy a gigantic ssd for fast speeds, just a fast boot speeds. I am going to buy a 32GB SSD to house my /boot partition and drivers. Is there a way to put the boot partition on the ssd and have the / "root" directory on the main 1TB Drive?

Something got my F 17 installation on my desktop mangled. I've decided to reinstall F 17 (Avoiding all of the issues I've read about with F 18's partitioning.) However, before doing that, I booted from a LiveCD and used Gparted to get rid of a small, redundant partition. Then, I folded it into /dev/sda3, AKA /home. Alas, the program hung.

Okay so using the smart option, my harddrive has 15 bad sectors, all because of a very bad hard drive. I need to pull some files from my gf laptop before resorting to buying and tossing the old drive. Im using the latest ubuntu version as my live cd. However i can not mount the hard drive because of these errors.
