[ubuntu] ATI Radeon graphics card problems

http://ubuntuforums.org – My friend has a computer with an ATI Radeon x1950 Pro graphics card installed. A few months ago, (he was using Windows XP) his display stopped working. All we could tell was the boot was successful but his monitor was displaying a "NO SIGNAL" message. It was possible to load the screen but only if we disabled the video card using BIOS and loaded it using the onboard card, which was a horrible solution that wouldn't load in any manageable resolution. In a last-ditch effort, I persuaded him to install Ubuntu (I'm a long time Ubuntu user). This worked better than I expected, and his video card works properly with full Compiz effects. This makes me think that the issue was a driver issue and not a graphics card issue, but I'm not a hardware expert. Does anyone here know anything about such things, and could guide me towards finding the solution for this problem? Thanks in advance. (Hardware)
