I'm not sure if the issue ultimately falls on Ubuntu or xmonad, but when I use the unity desktop in Ubuntu from my VM, when I resize the window, the desktop resizes accordingly, but when using xmonad, I have to use scrollbars to view the whole screen (I have the VMware Player window as tall as I can make it on my laptop monitor).
I used to be a lot more proficient at linux, but I haven't used it a
I have 2 nvidia cards with three monitors Left (0), Middle (1), and Right (2). I have to use xinerama to make them all one desktop because xrandr only joins 0 and 1, leaving 2 as a separate desktop. My understanding is that xrandr can ONLY join two desktops, which is why I am using xinerama.
After MUCH trouble, I have three displays, all one desktop. But, there is a problem.
I installed Unity 5.0 to test on my 11.10 setup and I've just removed it recently. Restarting the computer, I can't logon to my desktop now. I insert my password, then a black screen comes up and then it goes back to the login screen.
Installations
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-team/stages
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Removal
sudo ppa-purge ppa:unity-team/stages

Desktop doesn't load in my newly installed Ubuntu 12.04.
I am unable to get the desktop to load in my newly installed Ubuntu 12.04.
Details:
I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a Gateway 5300 laptop (Computer #1) using the alternate ISO (ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-i386.iso).
I can install Ubuntu 11.04 on this machine and upgrade it to 11.10. But when I try to use 12.04 or 12.10, with either Unity, Xbuntu, or even Lubuntu, the screen goes black after I choose to install or try the DVD, until I reboot the computer.
I would like to upgrade the computer at least to 12.04, but am scared of the screen not working.
