Screen resolution stuck at 1024x768
I am facing this problem of low resolution in Ubuntu 11.10. Optimal resolution of my monitor is 1280x1024, however in Ubuntu I am getting maximum resolution as 1024x768. I did not face this problem with Windows 7 installed earlier on my system.
I followed the solution suggested here but making those changes in my xorg.conf file didn't help. When I restart my computer, I still have a resolution of 1280x1024 even though my native resolution is 1440x900.
i'm using default ati driver, because X always crash when i use fglrx and fglrx-updates driver
when i use randr, the output was:

At work I use a Dell Latitude E4300 with a resolution of 1280x800 and an external monitor with a resolution of 1280x1024. I'm runnin g Natty on it with Gnome 3. Everything is working OK, but the desktop seems to be 1024 pixels high on both screens, so it extends past the bottom of the laptop's screen, which makes using any sort of dock or just a bottom panel pretty annoying.
Hello
Firstly, sorry for my bad english.
I recently installed Backtrack 5 R2 GNOME 64bits in my hard disk and I have a problem with the screen resolution.
My laptop is an ASUS N53SN with a Nvidia graphic card (Nvidia Geforce GT 550M CUDA 2GB).
The problem is that Backtrack doesn't recognize my real screen resolution, 1920x1080 in Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS but I only have three option in

I have a Compaq 5645LA computer. When I was using Ubuntu v11.04 with Nvidia 96 propietary drivers, my Compaq FS740 CRT display resolution was 1280 x 1024 pixels. Today I upgrade to Ubuntu v11.10.
I just installed a Acer x223w 22" widescreen monitor. I have a GeForce FX 5500 video card running NVIDIA drivers 169.12
When I set the resolution to 1280x768 the entire screen is filled.
When I set it to it's recommended resolution of 1680x1050 the left side of the screen has a 2 1/2 inch black bar. The screen is not filled as it should be.
I'm new to Ubuntu and I cannot figure out why it won't allow me to set my resolution to 1280x1024. I've looked at countless forums and nothing has helped. I have a laptop with an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller. There's no driver updates or anything along those lines.
