I tried all proprietary drivers for my NVIDIA GTS450 graphics card, and after rebooting my PC, i get a very low resolution, and no desktop environment. I've tried the experimental 304 version and both other available versions as well. I am wondering if it has to do something with my PC, or the drivers haven't been optimized to support 12.10 yet?
I have a problem very similar to this guy: Desktop does not show when I installed nvidia drivers!. I have the same problem with the desktop not being present when I install choose the nvidia drivers from the software sources dialog.
I've trie the answer mark as the solution, but this doesn't help me.

Hy,
here is a pict of my problem
I've installed the 185 drivers using system->administration->hardware drivers menu
i get that's noise or sometimes just freeze of whole desktop till i restart the computer after 5-10minutes of using the laptop.
I have installed newest Nvidia drivers (from their site with the .run file) on my laptop with Nvidia Geroce 420M.
After some time I decided to try out open source drivers there I went to System Settings -> Software Sources -> Additional drivers and clicked Open source drivers and applied the changes.
After a reboot I have had no Unity panel shown when I logged into the system.
Ubuntu 12.10 64bit + GTX 560
I'm aware that there are problems with the current Nvidia card drivers. I got the drivers and ended up seeing nothing but my desktop image when my computer restarted. I managed to remove the update, and I used the "fix" found on the linked page but it didn't work.
This is for cards that need the current driver. If you need a legacy driver (173 or 96) there are dkms packages as well, but I have no way to test them. Good luck!I have seen a few people having trouble with the proprietary Nvidia drivers on crunchbang. It should not be this way as installing the Nvidia drivers is quite painless in Debian.
When I turn on the computer directly with the TV on, after login in, It only shows a portion of the desktop; even if the whole screen works: Here is an example of how it looks http://imgur.com/WzsGz. Check the top menu bar, that is and background, that's the only part that works, the rest doesn't even-tough the mouse can go over there.
I re installed video drivers, xorg and lubuntu-desktop.
Hi All
So I upgraded to latest ubuntu (12.04) about 2 months ago, and after the upgrade I was only able to get 1024x768 resolution on the desktop.
