Ubuntu 12.04 unity problems

http://askubuntu.com – I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and it was all fine until last week. Now, there are several problems that I'm encountering: I cannot change my desktop background. Application lens is installed, but no applications are shown in the dash. Following are the things I've tried: Installing unity-place-applications and unity-place-files. Resetting unity using unity --reset and unity --reset-icons commands. Deleting some configuration files present in my home directory. Creating a new user. Also, Empathy always shows offline contacts the next time I log in, even if untick the Offline C (HowTos)

Icons gone from Unity 3D 40 weeks 5 days ago

All my icons har gone from Unity 3D, but present in Unity 2D. The icon for the Dash is also gone. All icons are present IN the dash, but when I add them to Unity the icon is suddenly invisble.

Everything works in Unity 2D.

I have a very strange problem: the "Applications" lens does not appear in unity dash. The unity-lens-application and unity-places-applications packages are installed, i tried also unity --reset but that didn't help.

My dash is completely empty. The alt-f2 run screen load applications if I type in the commands. But the others are completely empty on my own profile. In a guest profile, they work as expected.

I've read the other similar questions and tried both of these options.

I tried to remove the following packages:

I have removed the Unity DE using this command:

So I have an idea of what I did wrong, I am just not sure how to fix it.

After removing it, I cannot reset unity and it does not work.

Even after purging Unity and reinstalling it, I cannot seem to replace the missing files.

Okay, so I did all of the recent updates through the update manager yesterday, and rebooted... and now nothing loads, it's just my wallpaper really.

When I was getting acquainted with files and directories as a newbe, I mistakenly created a /Home directory. I also have the /home directory via ubuntu installation. So far it doesn't seem to effect/cause operational problems. How can I get rid of this other /Home directory without harming my Ubuntu 1204 OS.

Hi everyone. My wife also uses Ubuntu 12.04, about a week ago her applications disappeared from dash. I finally got around to searching for solutions online today since rebooting didn't work.
