I have a primary language, Italian, and I want also use a secondary language, English.
I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard.
For some weird reason language settings have gone awry and the OS language changed for some random reason from English to Chinese/Japanese. (I do not have a slightest idea why; keyboard is Finnish/Scandinavic.)
Any help concerning how to switch the language setting back to English much appreciated!
I have been using Ubuntu 11.04 until yesterday when I decided to install new 12.04 from a fresh install. I like changing system language interface from my primary language (Galician) to English when logging, in order to practice this language, but in the new lightdm I cannot see how. Is it possible?

I'm trying to change the language for a standard user account.

Then I logged in to the standard account, and moved the new language to the top by dragging it with the mouse. And then I reseted the machine and logged back in. But nothing changed.
Is it possible to show what language you are currently typing in Ubuntu?
I hate to use this example but on Windows when you switch, at the side it shows EN for English, RU for Russian etc, depending on what language you're using. Was just wondering if Ubuntu has something similar?

I've been able to install language packages for many different languages.
But selecting Swedish the Language Support software hangs.
First time I installed Ubuntu I selected Swedish as the primary language.
When booted up first time - I was told the Language Packages was incomplete.
When trying to complete the Swedish packages - I was told the
