Ubuntu 12.04 black screen at login

http://askubuntu.com – When I attempt to log into my account the screen goes black and then falls back to the login screen. I have pressed CTRL+ALT+F1 and was able to log in from there, however when I tried startx I got an error from x.org (I will try to write it down in a minute). The guest account works flawlessly so I am currently logged into that and created a temporary admin account through the settings panel. This account worked for a couple of times but has begun to freeze at the login (not the black screen, just freezing). Any ideas? Oh, and my home folder is encrypted, if that changes the situation any. (HowTos)

Up until recently my mother has been using the Guest Session when she logs on; now, the Guest Session will not login.

I am currently using a USB persistent install of ubuntu. its a simple 4GB drive with a 2.8GB partition ( casper-rw storage partition ). I setup an administrator account and set it to login automatically. I also removed ubiquity to simply use this as a go anywhere install. Heres my issue.

Im logged in as my account, and I click the top right gear and select "shut down".

I'm not quite sure what's causing it, but whenever I reboot instead of the login screen, I've got a black screen with the mouse cursor. If I hit ctrl alt f2 I can login, delete .Xauthority and change my home folder ownership to my account. If I do these things, next time I shut down all the way and then boot up, it loads properly. I'm running 12.10 from a clean install.

hello im not able to login into ubuntu admin...i type the password and hit enter, the screen goes black for a second and comes back to the login screen...im able to go into the guest account without any problem's..........btw i dont have a nvidia card ........was workin fine two hours earlier im using ubuntu 12.04

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which was working fine till today.

If I try to login using one of my user accounts it directs me back to the login screen, which is followed by a black screen.

I am sure the password I enter is correct because if the password is wrong it prompts "Invalid Password".

On the other hand I am able to login using a root or guest account.

Ubuntustudio 12.10 x64 with both XFCE and Unity, wich both worked fine for "main" user before, but now when trying to login, it just shows black screen breefly and returns to logonscreen.

When I boot Ubuntu, I enter my pass but then I see a blank screen and then I'm thrown back into the login screen. I am able to only access the guest account. I am using 11.10 (unity). Also, during my few hours running Ubuntu, it would occasionally crash and throw me back to the login screen, only now I cant login back anymore.

I have the same issue as others (see Login returns to login screen [closed]).

When I arrived at the login screen, I enter my password, the screen goes black for one second, displaying some text, and then it returns me to a fresh login screen.

I can go to a console alt+f1 and login into my account on the command line.

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04. I added the Ubuntu-X-Swat X-Updates repository and ran

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade

I blindly pressed ok (stupid I know!) and then restarted. Now I can't login it to my account, evne though my password is correct. It seems to go to a black screen tryign to log me in, then return me to the login screen.
