When I go onto the Ubuntu Software Centre, I get this message,
"Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalogue is repaired. do you want to repair it now?".
I click on repair, enter my password, and then after a few minutes this message comes up,
"Package operation failed.

Hi community,
I am new to Linux and Ubuntu and I think I ran into a big problem: With update manager I tried to update several files, but it did not work because the perl-base file always failed to install. So I tried Synaptics, which updated all other files, but failed with the perl-base as well.
When installing appears the message:
Package operation failed The installation or removal of a software package failed.
installArchives() failed: dpkg: error: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/dpkg/available' for reading: No such file or directory
Error in function:
When pressing "install" the install bar reaches just till the middle then the message appears, but the icon of the program
When I open my software center it asks me to repair it and then i say yes. It comes up with an error
installArchives() failed: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libmtp-dev:
libmtp-dev depends on libmtp8 (= 1.0.2-1ubuntu1); however:
Package libmtp8 is not installed.
The Ubuntu software center stopped working.
This is the error
installArchives() failed: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libmtp-dev:

I'm trying to update my system in the normal way - via Update Manager - but I'm getting an error message that I don't understand. Could someone help me diagnose and repair the fault please?
The message comes back "Package operation failed" and when I click details I get:
Code:
installArchives() failed: dpkg: too-long line or missing newline in `/var/lib/dpkg/triggers//File'
