Hey Ubuntu Forums, long time no see.
So i'm trying to set up a RAID, but i'm a bit inexperienced and i'm not sure if the configuration i want to achieve is possible. I was hoping someone more knowledgeable could point me in the right direction.
I have one 2TB and two 1TB drives that i would like to configure in such a way that would be equivalent to two 2TB drives in RAID0.
Got a RAID question. My PC has 2 identical 500gb HDs. My BIOS setup does not show anything related to RAID, I've checked every entry, every option, yet the 9.10 installer "sees" RAID.
So, is my hardware physically set up as RAID? How can I check? I'd like to have it as 2 separate drives, and screw RAID. What do I do?
I have software RAID on Ubuntu 10.10 with currently disabled hardware RAID controller, server has 2*500GB in RAID 1 drives for OS and 3TB*4 in RAID 1 for storage. What do i want, create hardware raid at least for storage w/o loosing data, or best option to add two new 3TB drives and create hardware RAID 10.
Can I have software RAID for OS and hardware raid for storage ?
I have several questions about building a large storage system:
How do you plug 16+ SATA drives into a motherboard? Are there hardware RAID cards that support 16+ SATA ports?
Can you grow a RAID 6 array from 6 drives to 16, one drive at a time?
How do you know when a drive out of the 16+ set is failing or has failed? How do you know which one?
I have a motherboard with an Intel ICH9R RAID chip. I have an existing RAID 5 setup over three disks which is NTFS formatted. I'm dual booting and I'd like to be able to access the RAID device in both Linux and Windows (and possibly OSX86, if I can ever get the darn thing to work).
So I have a 240GB ssd, a 160GB 7200 hdd, and 2x1TB hdd in a hardware raid 1. I installed windows on the 240GB drive. I want to install ubuntu 11.10 on the 160GB drive.
I downloaded the 11.10 alternate iso. The installer recognizes that I have raid configurationm and asks if I'd like to active the raid.
I have 4 2TB hard drives and I was thinking about using Raid 10. This would give me 4TB correct? My next question is would it be easy to add more hard drives to the raid array. For example if I bought another hard drive can I add it to the array without backing up any data?
Basically I want to be able to start off with 4TB and when the space becomes full add more space as needed.
