http://ubuntuforums.org – Good Afternoon All, Still thoroughly enjoying Ubuntu now having completely moved over from my Windows machine - I'm using Virtual Box with a XP installation for any Microsoft only stuff I am missing :) Does anyone know how to restore the standard Linux boot loader rather than the Ubuntu purple boot screen? I like seeing all the control daemons starting up so I can see what is going wrong, rather than sit there totally ignorant watching the dots goes round - reminded me Windows! I have edited /etc/default/grub removing 'quiet Splash' from:- GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet spl (Hardware)

So I just finished getting Ubuntu (12.10 x64) and Windows 8 dual booting on my UEFI enabled laptop. I installed from the LiveCD and then installed the necessary updates after the installation (as well as some other applications like Gnome Shell, VLC, etc). I then went to reboot the OS and now I hang on the purple screen. I attempted the nomodeset solution found here however it has no effect.

I have a laptop with the newest Ubuntu-version (12.04). I want to use the FN-Keys to adjust the brightness of my screen, but it doesnt work. Normally it should be FN+left arrow/right arrow.

Using Lucid, in the form of Turnkey Core.

Today I updated to the 3.0.0-15 kernel, and afterward the Ubuntu splash screen no longer appears during startup and shutdown. After the GRUB menu I get a black screen with a flashing cursor for several seconds, followed by a purplish screen with plain "Ubuntu 11.10" text, four dots underneath, and then some low-level boot messages.

I installed ChrUbuntu on an Acer C7 Chromebook, and I am able to dual boot Ubuntu 12.04 and ChromeOS and to control which OS loads by default. I tried to edit the /etc/default/grub file and did run update-grub successfully but saw no effects. I was trying to enable a "dmesg" style verbose system loading screen instead of the quiet splash screen (during the Ubuntu boot).

I am totally new to forums and Ubuntu, so please forgive any indiscretions!

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on an old P4 for my mother in law. The hard drive crashed. I recovered the installation to a new 500GB hdd using a Redo Backup image I had. It would not boot, so I fixed the booting with Boot Repair by booting from an Ubuntu CD. Now it boots - yay!

I then updated the Grub to Grub 2.00.

I am running Mint 12 x64 on a new ZaReason Verix laptop and get a black screen when I try to boot a live dvd. I like to check out other distros and know my discs are good so it has to be something else.

You have to edit your grub. Please make a backup: sudo cp /etc/default/grub /etc/default/grub.backupThe setting is only useful if you have a graphic card on an Intel Sandy Bridge CPU.

Hi. My computer is a Dell XPS 1730, and I have had a problem since I installed 12.04. It does not turn off, unless I apply for a few seconds the turn off button. It does not reiniciate, either.
