So I have been around the block when it comes to Linux Distros. I have tried everything from Fedora, to Gentoo, to Ubuntu. I have been a pretty faithful Ubuntu user for a couple of years now, it is still what I run my servers on. But I HATE Unity, don't get my wrong, Unity is not horrible for everyone, just me. I was happy with Gnome2, but I just don't like the new DMs.

Hi,
I have an older tablet Toshiba Protege M200. Any version of ubuntu with unity on it I am unable to install on my laptop due to obsolete hardware. I know for a fact that I can take unity off of my ubuntu desktop copy. I am wondering if there is a way to do a fresh install of ubuntu 11.10 or later without installing unity? If there is then I am able to install a newer version of ubuntu.

I did try Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit, but I found that it was not nearly as stable and I had a lot of problems with the package catalogue being corrupted when I removed software packages that I no longer needed.
