Was running Ubuntu 10.10 for a while on this laptop and it worked fine. Recently upgraded to 12.04 and, while things work fine most of the time, the system hangs occasionally.
When the system hangs it simply 'stops working'. The screen stays as it was, unchanged.
Hey guys,
I have a dual partitioned hard drive with win 7 and ubuntu 12.04. I am using an AMD Radeon 7850 graphics card and did not have trouble booting unbuntu until after I installed the latest update on from ubuntu on my computer. Now ubuntu starts out booting just fine but then the screen goes back and it enters the command screen.
I've been a good Ubuntu user since 11.4 on my Dell laptop, and everytime installed with USB stick but this time, I can't install Ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop. I had this issue again but then the networking solution didn't work since 12.10, so everytime it happened I made an upgrade on my existing installation and it just worked.

I then went to reboot the OS and now I hang on the purple screen. I attempted the nomodeset solution found here however it has no effect.
My computer's no longer booting. I rebooted because of a kernel update after 12 days of uptime, and for seemingly no reason I now get this error:
I usually get an error saying /dev/shm is already mounted, but it continues booting, but now nothing is booting!
I've made a clean install yesterday, for the first time restarted, everything went good and then after I updated packages and copied my old home directory to replace the new one, when I restarted it hung when it was booting.
I tried reinstalling again and doing the same thing, but again same thing happened.
Here's what I see, before when the Ubuntu logo with the five dots is shown:
