I have 12.10 installed on a Thinkpad x230. It works great except for sound. I do have sound in the login page, but after I log in and get to the desktop, everything is perfectly silent.
I went through all the guides, nothing is muted, alsamixer looks ok in the console etc, but no sound plays and no errors are reported that I can see. I tried restarting pulseaudio and alsa but no change.
For a long time I have been able to get a nice custom login sound in gnome shell by having the following command run after login:/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --file=/usr/share/sounds/Borealis_sound_theme/Startup1_2.oggAbout a week ago, probably after an update, that command stopped working. In fact, now I can not get any sounds that are linked to operating system events (errors, logout, etc).
