touchpad acting erratic in 12.10

http://askubuntu.com – I have a fresh-ish install of 12.10 and the touchpad has been acting strangely. First it's ignoring some of my settings, for example, I usually turn off the "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad" setting because I accidentally "click" when I don't want to. Second, the touchpad will occasionally go into a state where it jumps all over the screen and is completely unusable. When it's in this state I have to rmmod and reload the psmouse driver, I've done this a lot. Looking back at my shell command history I see it done ten times in the past day or so. This simple and brief tutorial is going to show Ubuntu beginners how to disable touchpad tap to click. To get started, go to top right corner system menu and click on System Settings.

Click on Mouse and Touchpad in System Settings window.

Now go to Touchpad tab, and you can see the checkbox before “Enable mouse clicks with touchpad”.

I have just installed Beefy Miracle XFCE_32 bit on my new ASUS 1015CX... Most of the things are working okay, except the CLICK and SCROLL function doesn't work from the touchpad.

I hate the touchpad on this laptop and use a wireless mouse at all times, but I don't dare disable the touchpad for fear of having forgotten to pack the mouse, dead mouse battery or whatever.

If I were to disable the touchpad (very easy in KDE 4.4.4) could I re-enable it from CLI in an emergency?

So, my touchpad works just fine when on login screen, but buttons and touchpad are completely unusable. Here's the kicker: the touchpad is NOT DISABLED. This occurred first after I locked the laptop and closed the lid while on battery power.
