I've had Ubuntu as the sole OS on my desktop for a couple years. Updated it to Precise soon after it came out. Today I decided to try dual booting to Windows 8. I bought a new, separate hard drive (SATA) to install Windows on. My Ubuntu installation is on my older PATA disk.
I disconnected the Ubuntu drive completely when installing Windows.
Hi, when I was installing Ubuntu I somehow managed to screw up the installation and the installer decided to completely wipe an almost full 2TB HDD (E: Drive).
I have 2 hard drives at the moment.
1. Internal Laptop HDD - I have 2 partitions, one partitions works just fine, other don't, but I extracted all my datats from the one that doesn't.
2. I have an external 500gb HDD, which I am booting ubuntu from and have stored all my recovered files in there.
So now, I need to COMPLETELY wipe out, format and refresh my Internal HDD.
I would like to do a fresh install on a OCZ Vertex Plus R2 SSD 60GB drive I purchased on the cheap. Since the AES-encryption looks like it may not work optimally for this drive, I would like to set up a dual-boot to Windows Vista (the only Windows copy I have for clean install purposes) and Ubuntu 12.04 with the best encryption scheme possible.
Bought a second hand laptop with no OS. Installed Ubuntu and have been running it now for about a year without any problems.
I have Ubuntu 12.04, and I was hoping to completely wipe my hard drive of Ubuntu.
Well, seeing as how it seems like thats practically impossible without a live cd/dvd (Which I no longer i have) I was curious to know if I can dual boot instead.
Note:Using GParted the permissions keep me from formatting my hard drive or altering it in anyway at all.
Have a laptop with new hard drive. Do I have to install Windows before installing ubuntu? I attemped boot from CD where I copied the .iso file and attempted same form usb drive. Set to system to boot to these, but does nothing. I just want to use only ubuntu - no windows. Is this even possible. Everything on the web seems so simple on a windows machine.
I would like to start off by saying that I am new to Ubuntu and forums as well. Lets get on with the problem now. I am on my old desktop, possibly about 7-8 years. It has 2 hard drives on it. 1 hard drive has Windows XP Professional installed on it and the 2nd hard drive is empty.
So I have an old Toshiba Satellite laptop from 1999-2000 that I ran a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 on. Everything seems to run fine from the Live CD, and the install process went without a hitch. However, after rebooting after the install, I get the error message:
NTLDR is missing
Press any key to restart
I tried the boot-repair-disk LiveCD, and had no luck there.
