So what is that file even supposed to do? I ran it in Windows but it tries interpreting the binary data as a command and fails.
I believe enabling VerbosePkgLists will show the old and new versions when upgrading. If you see a blank space where the old version should be, then it likely means a new dependency.
Why not just get rid of GDM and try LightDM, LXDM, or Slim instead?
What DE or WM are you using?Do you use compositing?What graphics chipset and driver do you have?
