http://unix.stackexchange.com – This should be very simple for experts in here. I have a Linux account with user disk quota of only 6GB. There is some data-folder in /opt with about 3GB of data with when compressed comes up 1GB. There are some symbolic links with in data-folder. Usually for taking a work backup I used to do the following. cp -rvfL /opt/data-folder ~/ cd ~/ tar -zcvf data-folder.tar.gz data-folder rm -rvf data-folder Now I have already consumed 2.5GB in my user disk quota, I have just enough space to copy files to my homw, but not to tar it again. Is there any way to tar and copy the folder with in a sin (HowTos)

i am using linux redHat 5 and fedora9

How can assgin disk space quota to particular user suppose i have 4 users user1 user2 user3 user4

All four users have a each folder /data/folder1 /data/folder2 /data/folder3 /data/folder4

i want to assign space limit/restriction of 100MB on each on folder.

I'm new to linux and I have question about mount point

I have two HDD in my system, one 500GB and one 1TB

The 500 is used for OS and swap, the 1TB is for storage only

the 500GB is name sda1 and 1TB is sdb1

I first mount the 1TB drive to /media/sdb1 Then I create a folder and add some test file in. I then I unmount it and remount it to /media/DATA.

I have a folder in my server which contains some files. These are automated that means everyday we get new files automatically which will overwrite the old ones. So want to take a back up for this data. How can i copy all these files in to a another folder by renaming the files with current date while copying.

ex : i have a folder named folder1 which contains 4 files.

Bit of a strange one that a client of ours found. When using the File Manager within cPanel, if you move a folder within an account it seems that rather than doing an actual move operation, it copies the data folder by folder, and then once successful deletes the original.
