System Sound vs Application volume mismatched

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – I'm using Fedora 11, kde desktop, and the alsa sound system, everything completely up-to-date via yum. Sound works with the exception that in order to get a reasonable volume from my applications (any applications), I need to set the master volume so high that the system sounds, like login/logoff chimes, are soooo loud I'm worried I'm going to wreck my speakers. I had exactly the same issue when I used pulse audio, so alsa seems unlikely to be the source of the problem. I have tried playing with the various master/pcm/channel volumes in kmix, but this does not resolve the problem. I tried lowering the volume in System Settings/Notifications/Player Settings, in which Use KDE Sound System is selected, but this also failed to fix the problem. I suppose I could try the setting Use an external player instead, but I hate to increase the system overhead by calling another application for system sounds when KDE should be able to do it. Other ideas or suggestions? Daniel (HowTos)
