The business plan went like this: Sell lots of touch-enabled tablets running Windows 8 Pro or Windows RT, and consumers would flock to similar smartphones and ultrabooks. Developers also would celebrate, Microsoft claimed, because new applications could essentially run — largely unchanged — across Windows smartphones, tablets and PCs. It was a heck of a business plan.
