The setup
I run a Debian Squeeze host that I use to build a multilanguage project (python, java, php...) and generate custom packages (debian and RPM) automatically (through jenkins)
The problem
The target distributions of those Debian packages are Etch, Lenny and Squeeze.
Holla :DI just found out about crunchbang. I like that its Debian based.I'm been using Debian for the past 2 years, really liked it, I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a new laptop as Debian Lenny was getting a bit old, and I wanted to try out Ubuntu.
We are seeing dozens and dozens of posts on the internet about Ubuntu. I am not telling that I dislike Ubuntu, but I think that a lot of people are not aware that Ubuntu is Debian based. News about Debian is scarce. We are waiting for a new stable release and Squeeze is hopefully becoming stable this year.
The first CrunchBang 11 "Waldorf" development builds are now available for testing. For anyone unaware, these are the first builds to be based on Debian Wheezy sources. Wheezy is the current testing branch of Debian and therefore is likely to experience changes, bugs and breakages.
Yesterday evening, Philip Newborough announced the immediate availability for testing of the second Alpha release of the upcoming CrunchBang Linux 10 distribution. Dubbed Statler, the freshly cooked CrunchBang Linux 10 Alpha 2 build is now based on the Debian Squeeze operating system and, in sync with its repositories.
There are basically 2 ways of running debian testing a.k.a. wheezy (or unstable a.k.a. sid) with crunchbang goodies:1) you can either install #! (based on debian stable a.k.a.
Almost all the major Linux distributions are using LibreOffice instead of OpenOffice. Today, it has been announced that Debian Squeeze too will get LibreOffice in the backports.LibreOffice has been available in Debian Wheezy and Debian Sid for a while now. But in the stable release, Debian Squeeze, it is not available.
so i've had debain squeeze installed previously. i ran
Code:
aptitude dist-upgrade
because i heard squeeze is now in frozen. i ran
Code:
lsb_release -a
and got this
Code:
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux testing (squeeze)
Release: testing
Codename: squeeze
why does it still say testing? shouldnt it say frozen?
Again I'm thinking about ditching Ubuntu for Debian as a base system. Out of experience I thought I'd ask questions before actually doing so :P1. Which branch is best to use? Stable, testing (squeeze?) or unstable (sid?)2.
