http://crunchbang.org – I tend to use just an .xinitrc without any login manager, 'cos I'm raw like that. But I did have a little go with SLiM the other day, and I have it that slim.conf can do what you want without creating an .Xsession or an .xinitrc. I just had the wm's listed like: openbox-session, herbstluftwm, spectrwmfollowing from where the existing wm is. I assume the default is the first entry. (HowTos)
