Hi, I'm using a Dell E6500 with a PR02X port replicator and a 2.1 external speakers.
With the laptop docked, sound comes from both the external and internal speakers.
I have two different sound devices for output:
"Internal Audio Analog Stereo" for headphones
"High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)" for speakers
For example: if I open a music player and start a song, it plays out fine from speakers. But when I try to control volume it controls "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" instead of HDMI.
I've been running Ubuntu on my HP Touchsmart IQ504 (a desktop) for two or three years, and I've been through two or three versions of Ubuntu in that time (I'm now on 64-bit, Unity 12.04).
The internal speakers have never worked.
I have enabled "simultaneous output" in PulseAudio Preferences, I run pasystray(pavucontrol for volume), and want to use both HDMI-output as well as internal output in different application at the same time, but sound configuration (both pavucontrol and phonon) only lets me activate 1 device at a time (by selecting card profiles).
On my system, the sound works perfectly fine on the speakers in my laptop. When i plug in headphones, the sound comes out of the headphones AND speakers. It doesn't seem to recognize whether the headphones are plugged in or not. It actually doesn't seem to recognize that there are any headphone inputs at all.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 dual booted with Windows 7 on my Lenovo laptop. In windows 7 sound plays fine from speakers and headphones. But in Ubuntu sound only plays through the headphones, not the speakers. I researched and have been troubleshooting with no luck of getting the internal speakers to play.
Ok, I installed pavucontrol, and switched my output to speakers. It would seem that when it is set to headphones (auto-volume switching), it is attempting to send audio to a non-existent channel on the sound card. I believe the switching of audio is all done through the card, which is why it breaks when it is done through software (it works through headphones when speakers are set as o
I have a 12.04 setup in which Audio works well from my laptop's internal speakers, but as soon as I plug in my speakers or headphones, the 'Mute' hardware light on my laptop lights up and obviously there's no sound output.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Ubuntu 12.04
I recently switched from 11.10 to 12.04 and my headphone jacks have stopped working and my speakers now have extremely low volume no matter what they are set to. I have no clue what to do.
