Sony Computer Entertainment America has just been hit with a class action lawsuit in California over the company's recent decision to remove PlayStation 3 support for the Linux operating system in a firmware update.
I know that many of you guys already heard the last week's rumors (more or less) about Sony dropping the support for Linux-based operating systems, by removing the "Other OS" option from XMB (XrossMediaBar) in its PlayStation 3 gaming console. & Geohot& posted a video yesterday demonstrating a tweaked version of Sony's 3.21 firmware update for the PlayStation 3, apparently restoring the ability to load Linux on the console. It's said the CFW (custom firmware) may even work on the & Slim& consoles introduced last year....
Sony has announced that a new firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3, to be released on April 1st, will remove the "Install Other OS" option from all versions of the console. The announcement in the company blog cites "security concerns" as the reason for the removal.
It all began when a young man named George Hotz began to work on the PlayStation 3, trying to gain access to the machine in a way that made Sony uncomfortable. In response, Sony removed the OtherOS functionality of the PlayStation 3 in a mandatory update, and the hacking community was not happy with this decision, resulting in a sort of cold war.
In what will surely be a blow to Linux fans the world over, Sony is dropping support for the open operating system on its PlayStation 3, citing security concerns. The move will take effect Thursday with the release of a firmware update to version 3.21.
