I have reinstalled Ubuntu at least 12 times, it's no joke! I keep doing stupid things to f#$% up the sytem. One thing I have noticed is the want of a System > Administration > menu. I have looked everywhere. I just saw a post that said go to "System > Administration > "Synaptic Package Manager"" but of course I couldn't.
I have just done a series of totally clean (new /home and all) installs and using expert install allowed creation of a root password (not sudo) on 3 of the 4 installs. The installs where I allowed a root password so I could log in as root, either from a non gui cli or a root terminal, will not allow me to log in or do anything as root.
Irssi is perhaps the most popular irc client in the Linux world. However the default settings of Irssi are way too simple and complicated to new users. If you like the features of Irssi but need something that is more newbie-friendly, Weechat should be the first option for you to consider.
I installed the current version of Nvidia drivers through sudo apt-get and I use current as the parameter for version and after I install (no errors installs properly). When I try to restart to get the drivers to kick in. My Ubuntu no longer functions I log in and it never loads the desktop just sets on a blank background forever.
