I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 64 bit 12.04 (from the DVD) to a Lenovo V570 laptop.
I did a dual boot install with Windows 7.
HelloIve just attempted to install arch for the first time, however grub fails when attempting to install/boot is on sda5 and root on sda6. both are logical partitions, the rest are primary.
I recently repartitioned my hdd and I have damaged grub on my system. On boot I get the grub rescue prompt and I have to go through the following steps in order to boot normally:
set root=(hd0,msdos6)
set prefix=(hd0,msdos6)/boot/grub
insmod normal
normal
(Those steps were found on another post on here!).
I'm very tired of repeating this on every boot, how do I permanently fix grub>

I did a dumb thing... I forgot that Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) switched to Grub2 which puts a ton of *.mod files (kernel modules) in /boot/grub. I thought they were soundtrack files put there erroneously and moved them. Needless to say, the next reboot was traumatic. I was presented with something I had no memory of ever seeing...
I have my FC11 system set up to automatically download and install updates.
I had to reboot yesterday because of one of these updates. It seems that this update messed up grub. When I rebooted I only got the flickering cursor.
So far I have tried the following using the rescue disk and executing chroot /mnt/sysimage
fdisk -l gives me this result :
My computer has (had) a dual boot of Ubuntu Precise and Windows 7. Recently, when I started the computer, grub gave me an error saying "Unknown filesystem", and sent me to grub rescue. I searched for solutions to this, and found this answer: Unknown filesystem error: grub rescue.
Fresh install of XP followed by a fresh install of 12.04 results in the following error: error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> and the machine will not boot. Prior to the 12.04 install, XP worked fine. During the 12.04 install, all partitions and free space was visible, and the install seemed to complete without issues until the error message.
For some reason, most of the files in /boot/grub just vanished!
