I have been experiencing an ongoing problem with my ubuntu install that is driving me crazy. I have a few external usb hard drives hooked up to my PC that are getting very slow transfer speeds. At one point I had windows xp installed on this same PC and my transfer speeds were fine, so I know its not a hardware problem.
I have an laptop running 12.04 Ubuntu, which is acting as a dedicated NAS. I store all my photo and videos on it etc
I use Samba and smb.conf to share to other devices. I can access it and transfer photos etc from my phone and a windows 7 netbook.
I have two laptops,
One is running Ubuntu 12.04 (EXT4) the other is running Windows 7 (NTFS).
I am copying over 40gb of data (one file) from the Ubuntu laptop to the Windows Laptop.
(Browse the shared folder on Ubuntu using Windows copy/paste)
But I am getting transfer speeds topping out at ~700kb/s Surely this is not right.
I am transferring via wifi on both laptops.

Hello ,
I have a smb share on F17 x64 PC , which serves quite well for my home network over 1GB LAN connection. On Win PCs and other devices I can connect it without any problems.
Lately I have installed F17 on my own PC and tried to access the samba share on the fedora box, I have seen very slow transfer speeds while accessing my files.
I've setup a server which I've connected to multiple PCs in my workplace. Sadly, data transfer speeds are at max 3 MB/sec per connection which works out slow for file transfers, especially when transferring large files. I'm using Windows filesharing and the server is a Windows Server 2008 (2 Ghz CPU, 1 GB RAM) and the client PCs mostly running Windows 7.
I am trying to troubleshoot my home lan because of slow file transfer speed. I have 4 machines that all run ubuntu 12.04 and all experience similar transfer speeds on my network. I transfer a file to a pc sitting 2 feet away at about 3 MB/sec (Samba, nfs). 1GB network card, router supports 1 GB speeds, switch supports 200mb, full duplex on all machines.
As mentioned in the title I tried transferring files between Windows 7 and the samba server running on both Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 but both showed very slow transfer speeds.
Can someone please guide me in the right direction to debug this problem ?

Client : Windows 7 x32 | Dell Latitude E6510, transferring to another identical machine over the network.. 120mbs.
Transferring to any server (2003 server, 2008, 2008R2, or VM's) I can not get more than 30MBS. The server is plugged into the same switch and is a physical server. I have jumbo frames and flow control enabled.
