Hi and welcome to the forum.If the only difference is whether or not you use a login manager, it's probably ConsoleKit related. For example, SLiM (and I think GDM/KDM too and probably others, as well), already start it, so you don't need another ck session in your ~/.xinitrc (see the first note from the SLiM wiki page). Which login manager do you use?
Hey guys me againIve just installed Slim. and changed my rc.conf putting slim in the correct area, slim boots up fine. and then when i login it says that it failed to load session. so i checked my ~/.xinitrcexec ck-launch-session dbus-launch openbox-sessionand it all seems proper.
Startx is just a script that calls xinit - you can look at it and see all the crap it does - but the relevant part for this is that it starts a dbus session.In your xinitrc your exec line shoud beexec dbus-launch --exit-with-session <WM>where <WM> is replace by your window manager.
