The problem is that each time I shutdown/reboot, there's a message saying "Unmounting Non-API Filesystems" failed, and the next time system boots, fsck will recover journal. I looked into etc/rc.shutdown, found that it calls umount_all in etc/rc.d/functions.

There is a long (2 minute?) timeout, after which the shutdown completes sucessfullySorry for the slow response - bad couple of weeks....In this instance, it really is a hang - I've waited for more than 30 minutes on a couple of occasions.I've also discovered a few other things.
I am using ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop (64 bit) for a long time. Few days back there was some issue with power supply and i have to shutdown my desktop using power button in hurry. Now when i am going to shutdown the desktop, the shutdown process starts and ubuntu logo and five dots comes and then it hangs. Can you tell me what went wrong in the situation of mine?
I don't know what i did or what happened?

Hi,
I'm using Mythbuntu 12.04 (although I had the same issue with 11.10 which is why I did a fresh install of 12.04 with db export/import). I have set it up with mythwelcome to shutdown when idle and start up for recordings according to:
http://http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/ACPI_Wakeup
For the most part it all works well. However, occassionally the system hangs when shutting down.
Any difference if you use KDE shutdown dialog, or use "sudo shutdown -h now" ?Are bundles unmounting cleanly? Tried stopping bundles and running "cb-clean-lopps" before shutting down?
Hi,friends
I vividly remember the beep in 9.04 when I shutdown the computer
sudo shutdown -h now
and I will hear a "DI"/"Bee" sound
sudo shutdown -h +5
and I will hear 5 beeps every minute till it is power off
The beep is a great warning for me and I really need this feature
When I need to reboot (sadly, the days of 300+ days of uptime appear to be long gone) while logged into my account, the Shut Down option only logs me out - it does not shutdown the system.
I'm looking for a log file that shows what programs are running at shutdown and if a program hangs during shutdown.
I have this one program that constantly hangs, and shows up as an unknown program, during shutdown/reboot/log-off. I think there should be a log of the shutdown process, but I have no idea where to find it.
