Should I use ClamAV?

http://serverfault.com – I installed ClamAV and PHP-ClamAV on my Ubuntu server. Everything works... But it is extremely slow. Even when I just call basic functions without scanning a file. So it got me wandering if I really needed ClamAV and if they were other alternatives to protect my server from potential problems with user uploaded files. So should I use ClamAV or is there better and faster solutions to protect my server from user uploaded content? (HowTos)

I've packaged up clamav into some rpms for distribution inside our rhn, however I'm having some issues with dependency resolution when doing upgrades.

the spec file builds 4 packages: clamav - contains the main files clamav-db - contains the virus definition files libclamav - contains the clamav libs libclamav-devel - contains devel files

I am running OS X server 10.8 ClamXAV is built in. I have installed and am running squidman (Squid proxy server). I'd like to install HAVP and get it up and running.

The error I get when I ./configure:

checking for ClamAV scanner library... clamav-config not found

Error finding ClamAV installation!
