I also had the issue with a hdd which randomly timed out at startup.I don't know whether this could be the problem, but how does your/etc/fstab looks like?If you don't use uuid, change it to uuid.
Check if the UUID from the fstab is right:$ lsblk -fIf it's not, maybe see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab#Swap_UUID

Could you explain how you are mounting the drive? You may have mounted it as read only.If you've done it by modifying /etc/fstab, check the options under wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab.If you're using mount (linux.die.net/man/8/mount) make sure you didn't use the -r or -o ro options.

This is embarrassing...After a bit of searching, I found https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151847 and realized that the problem was being caused by my fstab in which I had set a windows partition to mount on boot via UUID. I commented that out and am booting into my arch install fine now.
It is in our policy: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … uette#SpamJust use the "Report" button if anything like this occurs.

Acer Aspire 5742.I tried re-installing Arch (clearing each drive completely after backing up files) and it didn't even fix the problem. I believe that it's a hard-drive issue, which I'm dreading.
