That was a 7-inch tab and since then, they’ve released the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Galaxy Tab 8.9, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. and the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Samsung has admitted that sales haven’t blown anyone away. For now, the only real successful Android tablet is the Amazon Kindle Fire. Amazon changed the game when they started selling it for $199. Android tablets have been around since late 2010 starting with the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but the first mainstream Android tablet was the Motorola XOOM, which debuted in the spring of 2011. Soon after, we saw tablet after tablet after tablet get released, but nothing seemed to gain any major traction.

Samsung continues to be the leader in the number of tablets released by an Android manufacturer. They had the first mainstream tablet, the Galaxy Tab, and from there they continued to release various 7-inch tablets along with an 8.9 tab and a 10.1. This year they updated their tabs to the Galaxy Tab 2 by trying to be more competitive.

How low will Amazon’s tablets go? We’re now hearing that a $99 Kindle Fire 7″ tablet is in production, and will be shipping this year.

According to a recent comScore report, the Amazon Kindle Fire makes up over 50% of the Android tablet market. A recent study shows that the 7-inch slate nearly doubled its sales from December to February 2012, maintaining 54.4% at the end of the month. Samsung’s family of Galaxy Tabs take the second spot and sits at only 15.4% of the market, down from 23.8% in December.

You can say what you want about the Kindle Fire, but it’s clear that Amazon made the right decisions when it came to pricing and marketing.

Yesterday, Walmart announced that they will discontinue the sale of all Amazon Kindle tablets and eReaders.

Apple’s iPad still dominates the overall tablet market. But Samsung Galaxy tablets seem to be emerging as the Google Android standard. That’s The VAR Guy’s spin, based on IDC’s latest tablet sales research.

Amazon has been working on making its Kindle Fire lineup available all over the globe, and today they’re continuing on the warpath by releasing the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ in Canadian markets, although with a slight caveat. Due to licensing restrictions, these Kindle Fire models will not have access to Amazon’s instant streaming service.

Amazon broke into the tablet game a little less than a year ago, and although the Kindle Fire is not something I would recommend, Amazon changed the game for the better. By offering a $199 tablet, they forced companies to be more competitive, and I believe it’s one of the biggest reasons as to why Google and ASUS drew up the Nexus 7.
