run application dialog in gnome2 (alt-f2) without gnome-panel

view story

http://unix.stackexchange.com – My desktop environment is not using gnome-panel and when I run gnome-panel from the terminal, it ruins the interface (black areas show up, can't right click and remove panels, and more). I do want to be able to use its "run application" dialog box though. Is there a way to enable the panel just for this one feature? Or is it possible to use the dialog box without gnome-panel? I found something that behaves similar: gexec. I'm still curious if it can be done though. (HowTos)
