rsync large directory - building file list takes > 8 hours

http://serverfault.com – I want to use rsync to move my 512GB Mac OS X TimeMachine backup from one USB disk to another. I'm trying running rsync -aPEv source destination to do so. The problem is that I'm running this on my laptop at work, which I must take home every night, and the "building file list" part of the rsync is taking over 8 hours, so I have to terminate the task before the file copy begins. I'm completely new to rsync. Is there a way to parallelise building the file list, or breakdown the whole process into sub-directories so the whole process can span several working days? Would doing so prevent me (HowTos)
