So, im using an updated version of F18 and lately when i go to shutdown my machine, instead of saying "Restart" it says "Install updates and restart". Now for the last few times ive shut it down or restarted it boots back up and comes up with a box that says "an offline update was requested but no packages required updating". Can anyone help me out?

I am a noob to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I popped in the Live CD and it gave me a black screen with a cursor. (I read that this was fixed by typing "fb=false video=vga:off") That fixed it, and is not my problem. I just thought I might include it in this post because my problem might be related.
So at that point, things were going smoothly.
Hi!
Yesterday I was working on my own extension for gnome and my computer froze. I could switch to other virtual consoles using Alt+Ctrl+F(2) but I couldn't figure out how to restart gdm. On debian I could do a "service restart gdm3", but couldn't find the equivalent systemd command.
this is ouput of : strace sudo rc.d restart tor > tor.log 2>&1there are some "open" "access" "no such file directory" but i can not understand what kind of information it give.can you make a parse?i downgraded which packages were upgraded with --ignore flag.
Every time I restart the computer, the Sound Card in "Sound and Video Configuration" at "Phonon" under "Audio Hardware Setup" is reset to "HD-Audio Generic".
Which does not work, so I select "SB Audigy" instead and sound works just fine. Until I restart the computer.
