I was just playing with hardware on Ubuntu the other day, just by adding a second monitor (acer) to my laptop (dell vostro 1000). All went fine, some display settings worked out, other didn't (laptop could only handle the 1280x720 60hz setting, the acer screen could handle other screen resolutions and refreshrates).
So, I start Ubuntu on my laptop, then I plug in my external monitor and I go to preferences and click on display to change the screen from laptop io the external one, just as I click on display, the laptop screen goes dark, only I see the mouse pointer, and nothing on the external screen.
If I turn on the computer with the external display plugged in, everything works fine.
I'm running PCLinuxOS 2010.07 (KDE) on my Acer laptop with Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller. I have an external Acer monitor that displays at 1920*1080. I have selected my laptops internal screen to be disabled and use the external screen. The PC LinuxOS Control Centre selected the 'Intel later than 810 driver'.
Hi, guys.I am using Arch on my laptop. When I am at home, I use my laptop plugged in a 23" flat screen via HDMI port. But when I use it plugged in to the external monitor, the system boots showing the image only on the external screen, like I want.

external LCD monitor with: 1024x768
The monitor is permanently connected and recognised by the system.
Screen is expanded to the external monitor.
But each time I login, the external monior is dark and has to be reactivated.
This also happens when the monitor is active and I log out and log in as a different user.
How can I preve
Hey there,
I'm currently using an external screen with my laptop at home connected with a serial port.
When I'm in X, my laptop display is automatically disabled, when the external screen is connected.
Is there a way to do this also at boot time? Where do I have to configure this? Also I'd like to have my login shells on my external screen, when switching to them out of X.
Thank you.
I'm running xubuntu 12.04 on a 2007 macbook.

I'm currently using a Laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. When I'm at work I plug in a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Then I close my laptops screen and use it as a normal pc. Everytime I plug it in and plug it out, I have to change my system settings, because normally my laptop would suspend to RAM, when I close its screen.
I've recently installed 11.2 and find that today docking the laptop for the first time doesn't automatically enable the external monitor. I was expecting the external monitor to be enabled and the laptop screen to be disabled as the lid is closed anyway, i.e. the video to be switched to the external monitor when docked.
