Red Hat Summit recap: RHEL 6.1, cloud platforms, and a new openness

Microsoft, Red Hat, HP and Oracle all had big cloud announcements this week that highlight the growing trend toward enterprise cloud computing.

With the OpenStack Summit in San Diego this week, open cloud headlines were dominated by OpenStack announcements and analysis. But some new criticisms of the project emerged as well. A Forrester analyst cautions that companies may not get a return on their investment with OpenStack.

Members of the cloud computing industry this week announced the Open Cloud Initiative, a non-profit organization to advocate open standards in cloud computing, at the OSCON 2011 open source convention in Portland, Ore. The organization maintains a set of Open Cloud Principles, adherence to which will determine whether a given product or service can indeed bear the open cloud label.

The news and analysis on open source cloud computing keeps flowing after the CloudOpen conference in San Diego last week. New data from IDC released during the conference shows users overwhelmingly support the open cloud, but some bloggers are still skeptical that the open cloud is being defined too broadly.

Zenoss released a new report this week that predicts more than 50 percent open source cloud adoption among enterprises within five years.  In other open source cloud news, Rackspace has a new training and certification program for OpenStack, Citrix is building its IaaS platform and CloudStack is looking for speakers at its November conference in Las Vegas.

OpenShift is a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) product from Red Hat, Inc., a leading open source technology software outfit based in Raleigh, North Carolina. OpenShift is both a cloud platform and a free application that you can run on your hardware.

CloudStack has released its first new code since becoming an Apache incubator project in April, according to top open source cloud headlines this week.
