By default, the sound is muted and can’t open while you enable and log-in as root account in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty.
Here’s a simple way to make sound work after reboot.
1.) First, log out current account and log-in as root.
You can enable root account by running this command in terminal, enter current user password and then type and confirm a password for root account.
sudo passwd root

If you forgot your ubuntu user password,or you have enabled root user and forgot the password, you can try following to reset the forgotten password.

Hi
I've lost the root password to my system (or, I've lost all my passwords to the system, and I need a root account for reseting it so I can use sudo). The root account was locked with "passwd -l" so I tried booting into recovery mode, but I later discovered that I needed a password for dropping into root shell.
I found this on the fedora forums and was hoping it didnt apply to ubuntu. Please comment::
What am I missing? I change the root password on a unix machine, then try to log in with that password. PasswordAuthentication is set to yes in sshd_config and the sshd daemon has been restarted.
How can I recover root password :wall:
1) I am running Solaris 10 (X86) through VMware for practicing.
2) I was practicing root password recovery and deleted the password in /etc/shadow file.
3) Neither cant login the to the CLI nor Console
4) Selected the Soalris X86 failsafe in menu.. but not accepting to change the password.
A couple of days ago, our own Stacy Bruce reported that the DROID XYBOARD had been rooted. Now, apparently, the developer of this root method, which he calls “Motofail”, is stating that this same exploit works on all current Motorola devices running Gingerbread or Honeycomb.
The Droid 4 root (“Motofail”) should work on all Gingerbread Motorola devices that I know of.
I just installed Lubuntu as a user. It didn't ask me
anything during the install about root, or what root
password I would like. So now, when I need root to
change /etc/fstab or /etc/rc.local, I can't. When I
try to set up root admin in Users Accounts, it says
there already is a root. Nobody said nothing to ME
about setting up a root account.
I deleted the root line in passwd and shadow and then tried to copy the backup and was able to put it all back to normal from rescue mode. However when i get to my login screen i can not login as root anymore or even after logged in as another user i can not su - or su root, it tells me that root user does not exist...... I am at a loss.... thanks
