Quickflix to take over BigPond DVD rental business

Fresh from the announcement yesterday to take on the customers and inventory of Telstra's BigPond DVD rental business, Quickflix has announced the appointment of the former head of BigPond, Justin Milne as deputy chairman and non-executive director.

Hot on the heels of taking over BigPond's DVD rental business and appointing former BigPond head honcho, Justin Milne as its chairman, Quickflix (ASX: QFX) has hired another former Telstra executive as its CEO.

Telstra has revealed plans to shut down its long-running online DVD rental service, with customers to be referred instead to rival service Quickflix.

Although the death of DVD rental stores was predicted long ago and saw bookstores fall and fail in a far more spectacular fashion, Telstra’s sale of its BigPond DVD movie rental business may well be the last nail in the DVD’s coffin.

Australian DVD rental service Quickflix have this morning revealed that they’ve raised over $4.6 million in funding through private investors, with the money set to be put towards the company’s growing expansion plans.

Online DVD rental company Quickflix (ASX: QFX) has announced its entry into the IPTV market, signing an agreement with Sony Australia to provide a subscription movies streaming service through Sony's Internet connected TVs and other devices.
