question concerning messaging apps

http://androidforums.com – I am looking to download a sms app, and have noticed when reading there "permission" page that there are statements such as "allows the application to call numbers without your intervention", and "prevents phone from going to sleep". This statement is on different apps such as handcent, goprosms, pansi etc. To me it sounds not good, like it is allowing the phone to "willy nilly" dial numbers without you knowing it and possibly run up your phone bill. Now it may not mean that at all, but can someone out there give me an idea of what that means? or would (General)
