Question about data in /proc/net/dev

http://www.linuxquestions.org – Does the data marked "received" and "transmitted" in the file ---- "/proc/net/dev" represent the data that went through the ethernet adapter or both the data stored in the kernel buffer and that went through the ethernet? I'm asking this question because I wrote a program that transfer large file through network, but when I check both the data I sent/received and the data that in "/proc/net/dev"(I substract the data after I finished transferring with the data before I started), there is a big inconsistence (HowTos)
