I was about to start a new thread about this, as I too have the issue. Strangely, it doesn't occur on my Asus laptop, only on my main machine. Every time I boot the computer, the mixer in XFCE has the volume set to zero and it set to mute, so I have to adjust the volume and deselect mute.
Hi there,Is it possible to start pulseaudio muted, and to mute it before it's disabled, so that the static cannot be heard? The sound is rather jarring to the ears when you have headphones on!JH

It seems like I have solved previous problem by removing pulse folder and re-generating again, now after executing pulseaudio --start below output is shown:$pulseaudio --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.

Alsamixer doesn't come up with an option to change the volume, the site says that it has limited compatibility with my sound card, and suggested I use PulseAudio. All I need to be able to do is change the volume, it's stuck on 152% - see ncmpcpp.

I'm aware that this is part of how PA works, I wanted to know if anyone knows how to make it work just like ALSA without PA, where the individual app volume sliders do not alter the master volume if they get any higher than it.I'm using KMix under KDE 4.10.And ditching PulseAudio is not an option.PS: English is not my first language and I'm sleepy, let me know if you need me to reph
It seems that your device is working. All your need is find the mute button and uncheck it.

I just noticed that the media keys on my keyboard are not working: volume up, volume down, mute,...Also, ctrl+alt+L is not locking my screen.I'm wondering if this is a gnome-settings-daemon issue. g-s-d is running, and working in part because it sets my background, but why are none of these other keys working?Which application actually handles these keys?
