Properly determine the icon size to show on any device home screen?

http://stackoverflow.com – It seems using Java to define the size of the icon to set on a home screen is not a simple issue. One would assume 36-ldpi, 48-mdpi, 72-hdpi, 96-xhdpi but (and it's a big but) Some screens get a too small or too large icon on them. (like the Asus TF-201 belonging to mdpi and getting a too-small icon. it's an xlarge screen). Personally, I believe it's affected by screen size, although common sense dictates dpi already contains screen size in it. What can one do to properly determine the icon size to show on any device home screen? (HowTos)
