I'm trying to get GNOME working the way I'm used to on other machines. I have my preferences set so there are 4 workspaces and the workspace switcher in the bottom panel shows 4 workspaces. When I click on any of them then I go to that workspace, and that all makes sense.
I have ALT-1, ALT-2, etc in my keyboard shortcuts set to 'switch to workspace 1', 'switch to workspace 2' etc.
When I log-in on ubuntu 12.04, the workspace switcher often seems to "remember" the last used workspace when shutting down - and it switches to that one when I start up.
I'm using desktop switcher from the ubuntu unity plugin and easystroke to get the macbook pro feel with switching workspaces. Everytime I use it to switch right or left a little animation like thing pops up as I'm switching (pic below). Is there a way to remove the circled animation from popping up every time I use the switcher? I can ignore it, but it would be nice to hide it some way.
The first is the icon size on the left menu bar. I can't set it smaller than 32. I'd like to set it to about 24.
Second is the workspace switcher. It belongs on the top bar, not the icon bar. The design as it now is, is nothing short of annoying extra steps with the mouse. The top bar has all that wasted space and the workspace switcher belongs right smack dab in the middle.
I disabled the applet for desktop workspaces in my xfce panel(well I actually removed the panel all together), but now xfce seems to think my 4 workspaces are side-by-side and not splayed out, so the shortcut ctrl-alt-'up arrow' and ctrl-alt-'down arrow' dont work but the left and right arrow ones do.
Is there a way to show windows on ALL WORKSPACES? I can use alt+tab, after changing behaviour through ccsm, but Unity switcher only shows icons, which is very ugly and old-fashioned. Showing windows is far more convenient, and very common in modern workspaces, like mac and other linux's window managers.
I've found a solution, wich involves recompiling compiz!!
Seriously??
Provides a replacement for panel applet switcher.

I just updated my Ubuntu from 10.04 to 12.04 yesterday and so far I'm very satisfied with it.
There is only one thing which is still missing to get back just the same comfort as I had with the previous version.
I work on 4 workspaces and would like to have the ability to switch from one to another by just one click.
I run regular old Ubuntu with XFCE installed explicitly, and have been doing so for some time now (years). I'm noticing that since some recent update (to my 11.10 installation) that the XFCE panel doesn't respond to mouse-over (by auto-raising itself) when the mouse goes over the part of the panel covered by the "Workspace Switcher" gadget.
