http://askubuntu.com – This is the first time I have used Ubuntu on my desktop. I installed 13.04 to dual boot with Windows 7. In Windows, my screen resolution is 1280x1024. In Ubuntu, however, the screen was set to 1024x768 resolution. I went to monitor settings and saw 3 options: 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x1024. I tried to change the resolution to 1280x1024, but when I clicked it the screen turned off; but the power light of the monitor was blinking and nothing happened. The pc seemed to respond very slow, so I reset and the screen was 1024x768 again. I used the `xrandr command in the console and successfully (HowTos)
