preupgrade 16 hangs after boot

http://forums.fedoraforum.org – ok, my first major upgrade and I chose the preupgrade path (i also tried preupgrade-cli). The system downloads the version 17 and then I reboot the server to "upgrade to version 17" (after grub loads). Then another 20 minutes when it updates 1466 packages. I "think", I come very close to the end of installation where the whole system hangs/freezes (some times at 'NFS', sometimes at 'started login screen'). And no graphical display etc. However, 1. I can press ctl+alt+F3 and see a login prompt where I can login just fine (whereas system hangs at ctl+alt+F1). 2. (HowTos)

I ran preupgrade from a rooted shell to see any error messages that might not be shown in GUI, and as I feared, there was one error:

Today I tried to upgrad my FC8 to FC16 using preupgrader following instructions from http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PreUpgrade page. I have 200MB /boot partition but I used Method 1 in documentation to fix it.

The two issues I am seeking help with are:

A) When I am in Gnome pulseaudio stops working. If I boot into CLI and stay in CLI, or if I switch out of Gnome to the console (Alt+Ctrl+F2), I can play audio files again. Switching back to Gnome mutes (and stops) the audio playback, switching back to CLI resumes audible playback.

I tried going F16-F17 via preupgrade. Part way through the upgrade, preupgrade hung with no response. One of the consoles said something like "dump2efs media <path to luks volume> doesn't exist". (FWIW it hung on sbcl, the 2144th package of 2929).

I shutdown and restarted the upgrade.
