You can handle every feature of Mplayer through the terminal. Just to give you a taste of its awesomeness, here is a small trick to play video in a terminal using ASCII characters(in colour) through Mplayer. Enter this command in a terminal [shredder12]$ mplayer -vo caca video.ext A new terminal window will open and you will see the video being displayed using ascii character (General)

I bought a h264 security camera system last year and set it up to ftp video to my computer. I was able to get the video to play (even though it played a little fast) on Ubuntu 11.04 using mplayer.

A few months ago, I did a fresh install of 12.04 and I cannot seem to get the video to play with mplayer, smplayer or VLC.

I have video files in .wmv Microsoft ASF format. mplayer (console version which shows a video window without any controls) will play these but VLC won't (only audio plays). Installed mplayer-gui, but it won't launch and complains about some LIBAV-something environment variable... ?

I have the struggle when trying to play avi file . I left-click the avi file (MPlayer is run as default); and I have the fatal error report:

FATAL: Could not initialize video filters (-vf) or video output (-vo)

It seems MPlayer is the default player in my env Fedora11 KDE. When I do the same with others formats (mp3, mpeg, etc) , MPayer works well.

When I attempt to watch a video in mplayer with caca, the output (in xterm) seems to "blink" or "tear".

You can make MPlayer play h264-encoded video files a lot faster on multicore machines if you graft some libraries from the ffmpeg-mt project into the resulting mplayer binary. It is normal when I play media of rmvb, tp, avi format, but when played mkv format media, I got the error:
