http://crunchbang.org – Multiple installs may have given you multiple or different user IDs, that may have been the problem.Re using files from usb, if you copied them into your new system as the new user they should have belonged to that new user.However, if you used the root account to copy them in, then they would have been owned by root.Re truncated, that normally means a file has been zeroed out, ( has nil content ).Edit: If your usb was formatted with dos or vfat filesystem, all permissions are lost when copied to it (HowTos)
