[OtherOS] Getting Chromium OS to work on Dell Inspiron 1545

http://ubuntuforums.org – I used the following post, http://nickfarmer.me/chromium-on-the...inspiron-1545/ , to get Chromium OS to work on my Dell laptop but it's an old build. I'd like to use the Chromium Vanilla builds that are a lot newer but know I will run into driver issues (I've tried). I have those driver problems resolved in Ubuntu and was wondering what I could do in Chromium OS. I would really like to be on the latest version of the OS because I'm really considering getting a Chromebook and want to try it out before making that decision. Thanks for the help, guys. Today, Dell’s Technology Strategist, Doug Anson announced that a Chromium OS build for the Mini 10v netbook is available for download from their website.Chromium OS is the open source version of Google’s Chrome OS. Like Chrome OS, it is a minimalist operating system with just a browser – Chromium browser.

While Chromium team ppas won’t release new versions of Chromium browser, Alex Shkop will try to maintain more-or-less fresh releases of Chromium. Two PPAs were built for Chromium stable and Chromium development version. Install Latest Version of Chromium: For now, two PPAs only provide packages for Ubuntu 12.04. Launch a terminal from the dash home or press Ctrl+Alt+T.

I updated Chromium in 12.04 with apt-get from the official repositories and chromium-browser --version say Chromium 20.0.1132.47 Ubuntu 12.04. but "About Chromium" from the browser itself say 18.0.1025.168 (Developer Build 134367 Linux) Ubuntu 12.04

why is that ? how can I update Chromium ?

Confronted with this issue I found that I need to run a version of Chromium that is newer then the one in the repositories in order to use an extension that I want.

Can I get a such new, even latest version?

(At the present moment Chromium is 20.01, and the X-notifier extension needs 21.x. So it works ok in Google Chrome which is v.

So I've seen it stated a few places that Chromium OS is a spin-off of Ubuntu. (See, for example, this diagram or this article.)

Now I've never used Chromium OS (and I'm not even sure if it's released, yet), but I have to wonder: how is a browser-only OS based on a full-featured desktop OS? What components of Ubuntu could possibly be useful for Chromium OS?

Rui Oliveira has written a handy bash script that downloads latest Chromium dev build on your system.

These builds are from Chromium continuous branch which hosts only those builds that have passed Google's automated test.

Chromium web browser, the open source version of Google Chrome has reached version 21. The Chromium daily build ppa has stopped updating the packages after version 18 was released.
