Oracle, NetApp settle patent suits

Given that Android and its respective manufacturers are having a tough time against Apple these days it would be nice to see a win for Google and the Android platform altogether. Well boy do I have good news for you folks as Oracle is seeing its patent suits against the search giant crumble down around them.

Oracle's $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems appears threatened by recent developments, starting with difficulties in gaining regulatory approval in the EU and ending with a startlingly decline at Sun Microsystems -- a company that was on a downward trajectory long before Oracle made its play for it.

HP and Oracle have settled their dispute over the database giant's hiring of Mark Hurd.

As part of its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Oracle also acquired the Java technology. Oracle has the enterprise sector in its grip now (Java and OracleDB). However, we cannot forget how erratic it has been in handling delicate issues like the OpenSolaris project or the ongoing infringement case against Android.

We use mixed CIFS and NFS volumes and I want to run a single backup server that copies all of the files from the NetAPP to local disks that can be sent of site for backup/DR.

How would I configure the NetAPP to allow me to read everything on both CIFS and NFS filesystems so that they can be backed up with rsync.

Fans of the old Sun Microsystems may be wondering how the server business is doing at Oracle some three years after the acquisition. Over at GigaOm, Barb Darrow writes that Oracle’s gamble on hardware just isn’t paying off.

Oracle announced on Wednesday the completion of its $7 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems. At a briefing on its plans, Oracle pledged to reenergize Sun's brand name, products and other assets. Further, Oracle said it will continue its commitment to open systems and Java.

Oracle has pledged it will not assert copyright claims over MySQL and that it will extend terms and conditions of existing commercial licenses of the database for five years in the hope that the European Commission will approve its $7.4 billion pending acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
